Universities are not educational services – universities are about serving human development.

Over the years, the concept of "students as customers" has become increasingly prevalent in higher education. This has led universities to focus more on the learner experience, but it also raises a major question: If universities operate solely as a service, will education still retain its core mission of developing individuals? A happy university cannot simply be a place that satisfies students; it must be a place that helps them grow, become truly competent, and live meaningful lives.

From these perspectives, Dai Nam University, in collaboration with the Soha.vn website, is organizing a seminar: “Creating Happy Universities in Vietnam: From Vision to Action”.

1. Education cannot simply pursue satisfaction.

In conventional services, the customer is always right. But in education, if schools only try to please students with leniency, ease, and minimal pressure, they may inadvertently lose sight of the most important thing: the ability to help individuals grow and mature.

No one matures solely through pampering.

A student might dislike being reprimanded for being late to class. They might dislike difficult assignments. They might dislike group work, debates, practical exercises, or being strictly evaluated. But these very things are part of the process of developing competence and professional discipline.

Years after graduation, what students remember most is sometimes not the ease of the experience, but the teachers who were once very strict in order to help them improve.

A happy university is therefore not a place where "anything goes," but rather a place where students are respected, listened to, yet placed in an environment with demands, standards, and genuine motivation for development.

2. Universities are not degree production lines.

It is a journey of nurturing human beings. If universities are viewed simply as places that provide degrees and vocational skills, education can easily become a "labor production line."

But human beings are not products.

A true university not only teaches students how to make a living, but also helps them learn how to live.

It is a place where students learn to take responsibility for themselves, learn how to interact with others, learn how to overcome failure, learn how to work as a team, and learn how to bounce back under pressure.

A good doctor needs not only expertise but also compassion. A good lawyer needs not only legal knowledge but also professional ethics. A good engineer needs not only technological knowledge but also a sense of social responsibility.

These qualities cannot be formed solely through curriculum. They are shaped by the educational environment, the school culture, and the way teachers treat students every day.

Therefore, when talking about a "happy university," the core issue is not about beautiful facilities or vibrant activities, but about whether the institution truly helps individuals develop holistically.

3. University is a form of service to society.

A university exists not just for enrolling students, educating them, and awarding degrees. The greatest value of a university lies in the people it produces and the contributions they make to society.

Every mature, capable, and virtuous student is the most valuable "product" of education.

Therefore, universities should not be viewed simply as a service business model. They are a special social institution that fulfills the mission of developing individuals and serving the community through education.

A happy university is not just a place that creates temporary positive emotions. It should be a place where students feel they are growing every day, being inspired, given opportunities, and being adequately prepared to face life.

There may be pressure, conflicts, and even failures along the way. But if, after all that, the student becomes a better version of themselves, then that is the most profound success of higher education.

And perhaps that is precisely the true meaning of a "happy university."
