In the context of increasingly promoted judicial reform and the building of a rule of law state, case law is becoming one of the important contents of legal research, adjudication, and training. At Dai Nam University, the study and application of case law is not only an academic topic but also a practical solution to connect training with professional practice, helping students develop legal thinking, reasoning skills, and professional competence right from the classroom.

Case law – a bridge between theory, practice, and judicial reform.

On June 25th, the Faculty of Law - Dai Nam University organized a scientific seminar on the topic: "Case law in the Vietnamese legal system: Theory and practice," bringing together many scientists, legal experts, lawyers, and lecturers from reputable agencies, universities, and law firms nationwide.

Professor Dr. Dao Van Dong - Vice Rector of Dai Nam University (on the right) emphasized that scientific research has always been one of the important pillars of higher education.

Taking place against the backdrop of Vietnam's legal system continuing to improve towards transparency, uniformity, and alignment with international standards, the seminar not only focused on clarifying the theoretical basis of case law but also raised many practical issues related to the application of case law in adjudication, research, and the training of high-quality legal human resources.

In his opening remarks, Professor Dr. Dao Van Dong, Vice Rector of Dai Nam University, emphasized that scientific research has always been one of the important pillars of higher education. According to him, in the context of increasingly diverse and complex civil, economic, and commercial relations, incorporating case law into the curriculum is essential to help students access modern legal thinking and gain a deeper understanding of how the law operates in practice.

Legal experts, scientists, and lecturers exchanged diverse perspectives on the position and role of case law in the Vietnamese legal system, as well as its practical application in judicial proceedings and legal education.

From a professional research perspective, Associate Professor Pham Van Loi - Assistant to the Chairman of the University Council and Head of the Faculty of Law - analyzed the position and role of case law in the Vietnamese legal system, while also raising issues related to the current process of selecting, publishing, and applying case law.

The subsequent presentations approached the topic from various perspectives. Dr. Nguyen Minh Khue, Deputy Director of the Institute of Strategy and Legal Science (Ministry of Justice), provided scientific arguments on the nature and value of case law in the contemporary legal system.

Dr. Hoang Thi Ngan - Deputy Head of the Faculty of Law, Dai Nam University, delivered a speech at the event.

Meanwhile, Dr. Hoang Thi Ngan, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Law at Dai Nam University, focused on analyzing the role of case law in ensuring consistency in the application of law, thereby contributing to improving the quality of trials and strengthening public trust in judicial activities.

The academic discussions at the seminar showed that case law is no longer a narrowly specialized research topic but is becoming a practical requirement for legal training, especially in the context of a labor market that increasingly demands law graduates capable of analyzing, evaluating, and handling legal situations arising in practice.

Legal education should not only teach knowledge but also develop professional skills.

The seminar on case law also reflects the training orientation that the Faculty of Law - Dai Nam University has consistently pursued throughout its 12 years of formation and development. From its early days, the Faculty of Law has defined its training goals not only as equipping students with specialized knowledge but also as building comprehensive professional capabilities, enabling students to adapt to the professional environment immediately after graduation.

In that spirit, researching and incorporating case law into training programs is considered one of the important solutions to bridge the gap between the classroom and professional practice.

Instead of approaching the law primarily through theoretical regulations, students analyze specific cases, learn how the judicial system reasoned, and evaluate the legal issues arising in each situation.

Legal experts, lawyers, and lecturers from law schools, research institutions, and legal practice organizations shared their insights enthusiastically at the event.

At the seminar, Associate Professor Bui Xuan Duc - Professional Advisor of the Faculty of Law - shared his experience in using case law to develop critical thinking and legal argumentation skills for students. These are also core competencies that judicial agencies, businesses, and legal practice organizations are particularly interested in when recruiting personnel.

Dr. Nguyen Thuy Dung - Lecturer at the Faculty of Law - Vietnam Women's Academy, delivered a speech at the event.

Adding an international perspective, Dr. Nguyen Thuy Dung (Vietnam Women's Academy) introduced experiences in legal education through case law in several countries, and proposed models suitable for legal education conditions in Vietnam.

The presentations by Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Ba Binh - Vice Rector of Hanoi Law University and Dr. Nguyen Mai Linh - Head of the Department of Law on International Commercial Dispute Resolution, Hanoi Law University, on the development of the specialized course on case law also received great attention from the delegates attending.

"Real competence - a solid life": A training philosophy realized through academic activities.

Notably, the seminar was not only for faculty and researchers but also provided an opportunity for students to directly participate, listen, and exchange ideas with leading experts. This approach is consistent with the training philosophy of "Real Competence - Solid Foundation for Life" that Dai Nam University is implementing throughout the university.

After 12 years of establishment and development, the Faculty of Law has gradually affirmed its position as one of the leading law training units with an applied and practical orientation.

Through continuous innovation in its training programs, enhanced connections with judicial agencies and law firms, and the promotion of in-depth academic activities such as case law seminars, the Faculty of Law is gradually realizing its goal of training law graduates with solid knowledge, sharp legal thinking, professional competence, and the ability to adapt to the increasingly demanding requirements of a modern rule-of-law society.
