SKĐS - "Knowledge helps a person become a good doctor, but medical ethics, compassion, and a spirit of service are what create a physician trusted by the people and respected by society," shared People's Physician, Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Duc Hanh - Head of the Faculty of Medicine, former Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Health.

On July 9th, Dai Nam University held a graduation ceremony and awarded diplomas to 83 new medical doctors, the first graduating class after 6 years of training. This is the first cohort of doctors from the university to complete the medical training program since the Ministry of Education and Training allowed enrollment in the 2020-2021 academic year, marking another higher education institution participating in training and supplying human resources for the healthcare system.

According to the Faculty of Medicine's report, the first intake of the Medical program in 2020 had 105 students from 28 provinces and cities nationwide. After 6 years of study and training, 83 students met the requirements to be recognized as graduates and received their Doctor of Medicine degrees.

According to People's Physician, Associate Professor, and Doctor of Medicine Hoang Duc Hanh - Head of the Faculty of Medicine, former Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Health, the training journey of the first cohort of doctors took place in a special context when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in the early years of the course, posing many challenges to training and clinical practice.

However, by applying technology in teaching, coordinating with healthcare facilities, and maintaining the goal of ensuring training quality, the school still completes the training program according to the required output standards for medical doctors.

Students are exposed to the hospital environment starting in their second year and complete 27 clinical practice modules.

Clinical practice is the "soul" of medical training.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Duc Hanh, the training program is built on the basic competency standards for medical doctors issued by the Ministry of Health, with a training duration of 6 years and a total of 209 credits, of which specialized knowledge accounts for a large proportion.

Core clinical courses such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, and Pediatrics alone account for 79 credits. Students are exposed to a hospital environment from their second year and participate in 27 clinical practice modules throughout the course.

"We consider clinical practice training to be the heart of medical education. The ultimate goal of the training process is the practical professional competence of students after graduation," Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Duc Hanh emphasized.

To support practical training, the school has collaborated with 21 central-level and first-class hospitals, a disease control center, and two local health stations to organize clinical training for students.

Specifically, during their graduation internship, students choose one of four specialties—Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, and Pediatrics—to undertake a 10-week intensive internship at general hospitals in the former Vinh Phuc and Phu Tho provinces, following a one-doctor-one-student mentoring model.

The graduation results show that 1 student achieved an Excellent grade, 27 students achieved a Good grade (32.5%), 53 students achieved a Fair grade, and no students graduated with an Average grade.

The first cohort of doctors also recorded positive results in postgraduate training. In the 2026 residency exam, 7 out of 8 students who took the exam were admitted to the residency program at Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy in the specialties of Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

In addition, at the time of the graduation ceremony, many of the graduating doctors continued to participate in residency entrance exams at other medical training institutions across the country.

Medical ethics and a spirit of service define the value of a physician.

In addition to focusing on professional training, the first cohort of students from the Faculty of Medicine also participated in many scientific research and community service activities. Between 2022 and 2026, students from this cohort won 11 university-level scientific research awards, including one project submitted to a ministerial-level award.

Throughout their studies, students also participate in numerous medical check-up programs, health consultations, and volunteer activities in localities such as Ha Giang, Cao Bang, and Lao Cai.

According to People's Physician, Associate Professor, and Doctor Hoang Duc Hanh, training doctors should not only focus on equipping them with professional knowledge and skills, but also on building medical ethics and a sense of social responsibility in physicians.

"Knowledge helps a person become a good doctor, but it is medical ethics, compassion, and a spirit of service that create a physician trusted by the people and respected by society," he said.

Speaking on behalf of the newly graduated doctors, Dr. Tran Hai Yen said that the six-year journey of study was not only a process of accumulating professional knowledge but also a process of honing professional competence, clinical skills, and medical ethics.

"Today's medical degree is not only the achievement of the student but also the result of the support from family, teachers, and doctors at the practice hospitals throughout the training process," shared Dr. Tran Hai Yen.

These 83 well-trained doctors are expected to contribute to reducing the burden on healthcare facilities and improving the quality of medical care in the future.

Sharing her thoughts on the training orientation, Associate Professor Dr. Dao Thi Thu Giang - the school's principal - said that training doctors is a field with specific requirements, demanding high standards in terms of entry requirements, training process, and output standards to ensure the professional competence of students after graduation.

According to Ms. Giang, in the field of Medicine, the school is steadfast in its principle of not sacrificing training quality for the sake of graduation numbers, while maintaining strict output standards for medical students.

At the ceremony, the newly qualified doctors took their professional oath in the spirit of the Hippocratic Oath before officially embarking on their professional journey and continuing their in-depth studies in various fields of medicine.

Given the continued high demand for healthcare personnel, particularly at the primary healthcare level and in certain specialties facing shortages, the addition of more well-trained doctors to the healthcare system is expected to contribute to supplementing the healthcare workforce in the future.
