April 30 is the deadline for receiving high school entrance exam registration documents. This means that candidates who wish to apply for admission to universities and colleges still have a relatively comfortable amount of time to decide on their major and register for the corresponding exam subjects.

For many people, it is not too difficult to apply to a school, but it depends on their interests and the popularity of these majors.

Many admissions experts advise: You can still study a profession based on your interests, but you need to choose a school that is suitable for your abilities and not beyond your capabilities.

Candidates need to be wise when choosing schools to apply to.

Candidates need to be wise when choosing the school to apply to .

Don't be hard on yourself.

Lack of career and school orientation and not measuring one's own strength brought an expensive lesson to Bui Van Tuyen (An Duong, Tay Ho, Hanoi).

Graduated from Chu Van An High School with excellent results in the French program in 2013, Tuyen confidently registered for the entrance exam to Foreign Trade University. He thought that passing the exam would not be too difficult, but the result was a complete failure.

Staying at home waiting for the re-exam, in 2014 Tuyen registered to take the entrance exam to the French Department of the University of Foreign Languages (Hanoi National University), and this time he was successful. Tuyen is currently a second-year student in the high-quality class of the School.

“Being confident is good, but not too much, you need to measure your strength. I am good at French, but not good at Literature and Math, that is why I did not have enough points to get into Foreign Trade University last year. It is better to determine your academic ability to apply to that school” - Tuyen gave advice to those who wish to study at university this year.

Le Trong Huy (Tay Son, Dong Da, Hanoi) has just graduated from Information Technology - Civil Cryptography Academy.

Huy said: “Because I am passionate about information technology, I registered to take the entrance exam to the University of Science and Technology. At that time, my parents spared no effort to find the best place for me to study. I thought that if I took the entrance exam to the University of Science and Technology, it would be too much, but I thought that if I tried so hard, I wouldn’t have enough points.

In the end, I missed the mark and spent a whole year at home studying again and researching a suitable major. Until now, I still believe that I made the right decision when I applied to the Cryptography Academy.

Now I have graduated and have just been recruited to Cable TV, the job is available immediately and my favorite field, information technology, is still guaranteed.

Like Tuyen, Huy's advice to students who wish to apply to universities and colleges this year is to measure their abilities. "You can still study the major you love, but if your academic ability is average, you should apply to middle-ranking schools to be sure," Huy shared.

In fact, although before each admission season, most schools and families provide more or less career counseling and guidance to students, the effectiveness is still not as expected because at this age, students tend to be more emotional. Many career choices are made by students based on the hotness of the labor market and are not calculated based on scientific data.

The lesson of human resource saturation in the fields of economics - finance - banking a few years ago is still there. That said, we cannot blame all the students, but the initial mistake also partly contributed by the schools themselves when rushing to open these majors without quantifying the market demand.

Be proactive, but be smart

Dr. Hoang Ngoc Tri - Member of the National Education Quality Assessment Council - advised candidates wishing to apply for admission to universities and colleges this school year to "cut their coat according to their cloth".

“Before choosing a suitable career, you need to determine your academic ability. In particular, you need to consider the job needs of each industry, not choosing a school based on high or low criteria, because in fact, studying in universities and colleges is only the first factor.

If you do not have passion, enthusiasm for learning and are not capable of entering the profession, failure still awaits you, because in reality, when recruiting people, businesses and employers do not only look at which school you graduated from and whether you are useful or not, but all must pass very strict exams, and qualifications are only one factor," said Dr. Tri.

Knowing your limits and not chasing after top schools or hot professions that are not suitable for your abilities and ability to get in is the advice that admissions experts give to candidates.

You need to know that if you choose a major and study according to your interests, schools will also choose students based on their abilities. A student who is not good at studying will certainly have difficulty getting into a top school, so it is necessary to consider the appropriate level for each individual.

Our country is on the path of industrialization and modernization, so the demand for labor for various occupations is becoming more diverse; but the problem here is whether the capacity of that labor meets actual requirements.

In a developing economy and the process of increasingly deep integration, the developing labor market will open up more opportunities, but it will either be deeply specialized or general, not the average type of engineering graduates who cannot find a job and then go down to work as general laborers.

Currently, the system of universities, colleges, vocational schools and vocational training schools have all met the learning needs of the people well. Therefore, it is better to proactively choose a suitable school and major for yourself, rather than letting the school choose you, or else you will end up with nothing!

At the end of 2014, information from the forum "Stakeholders in applied career-oriented higher education in Vietnam" said: In the third quarter of 2014, there were 174,000 unemployed bachelors.

A recent study on human resource needs in Ho Chi Minh City shows that in the next 5 years, this area will focus 85% of its demand on trained human resources, while the demand for university degrees will only account for 13% and for post-university degrees will account for 2%.

But the reality is that most Vietnamese high school graduates prefer to go to university rather than vocational school.
